Bio-Energy

The Biogas project provides an alternative source of energy to replace crude and unhealthy methods like wood cutting which cause many respiratory problems and degrade the environment.

Target area:
This biogas project will target the entire country with services available to anyone interested. But since biogas does well with households that can access non-contaminated cattle dung or piggery waste, the program will initially target areas with cattle and piggery farming, particularly those implementing zero-grazing.

The Vision/Plan:

  • The vision is to see at least one bio digester constructed in all the sub counties of Uganda and ideally in all the villages of Uganda. The plan is also to train two or more people in these areas. The trained people would then provide the necessary support, information and advice to whoever wanted to build one at his/her home.
  • To carry out Open Day events to provide information to the public about biogas technology and its benefits to the user and the nation. Also to try and partner with other interested parties (other researchers, NGOS and government) to further this research.
  • To expand and make this simple technology popular to neighbouring countries of East Africa.

Biogas keeps the environment free of organic wastes, is convenient, time-saving and reduces smoke-related illnesses often associated with the use of firewood. If the majority of Ugandans adopted biogas, we would preserve our biodiversity. People should exploit decomposing raw materials, which are free. Biogas plant maintenance is not regular, constant energy, no load shedding, local technicians are available, appliances are now locally-made and there is no metering therefore, no monthly power tariffs.

What are the benefits of Biogas?

  • Cheaper than charcoal or firewood
Biogas is a cheaper source of energy for cooking. Whereas the start up costs of building a digester are high, in the medium and long term, biogas is cheaper than charcoal.

Moreover, when biogas is produced at home, the girls do not have to spend long hours everyday collecting firewood. This protects them from possible exposure to dangers such as defilement and rape when they go looking for firewood.

Furthermore, women will be released to find financially productive work. There will be an increase in crop yields as a result of using a superior organic fertilizer. There are savings in health related expenditure and the value of life saved.

  • Good Health
Biogas is a clean source of energy for cooking and lighting in rural homes. Charcoal and especially firewood produces unhealthy fumes which over time cause sickness and acute respiratory infections such as coughs, colds, asthma. However, with biogas the kitchen remains clean, healthy and pleasant and households are able to boil drinking water to avoid water born diseases, and warming leftover food before eating. The manure spends 60 days in the digester at the end of which all the germs, including those that cause cholera and typhoid, are killed.
  • A Fertile Garden
Bio-fertilizer is a 100% natural and organic fertilizer, based on composted organic material, renewable energy source. The composting process is achieved through microbe activity. Bio-fertilizers are cost effective and eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. They provide a sustainable source for nutrients and healthy soils.
  • A Healthy Environment
The use of biogas for cooking and lighting ensures that fewer trees are cut down for firewood and to make charcoal. This contributes to a greener and healthier environment. Biogas energy is a form of renewable energy.
